Gareth is a sociolinguist and political sociologist who completed a jointly-supervised PhD at the University of Essex in 2009. Since 2010, he has taught in the Linguistics Program at Duke; his teaching includes the core course Introduction to Linguistics, as well as courses in language policy, critical discourse analysis, and language in social media. His research on neoliberalism and English-spread has been published in Language in Society and his book Language, Society and the State: From Colonization to Globalization in Taiwan is due to be published by de Gruyter Mouton in 2019. Gareth has written or been interviewed for various media outlets on language, society, and politics, including the Guardian, Huffington Post, Seattle Times, and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
