Sounds of Language: Introduction to Phonetics and Phonology

Comprehensive introduction to the sounds of human language. The course begins with phonetics, the study of the physical nature of speech sounds, followed by phonology, examining how sounds are mentally organized into abstract systems. Students are exposed to theoretical frameworks which seek to account for crosslinguistic differences and universals in languages of the world. Final units include related content such as first and second language phonological acquisition processes, speech perception, communication disorders, variation, and sound change.
